The Canadian Centre for Architecture presents ”Function, Economy, and (When Possible) Beauty: Architecture of China 1949–1979”, an exhibition produced with M+ Museum in Hong Kong. This exhibition explores how, despite widespread beliefs that nationalization stifled creativity and prioritized industrial over aesthetic values, architecture in China during this period was dynamic. It uncovers social and cultural micro-histories that show inventive materials and techniques, as well as diverse influences, challenging the perception that Mao-era architecture was monolithic and autocratic. Discover a nuanced vision of China’s architectural legacy.
