15 delicious options for a #Date Night Challenge

Petite Italie et Villeray - Comptoir Sainte-Cécile

Indoor restaurant dining in Montréal hasn’t resumed yet but you can still have a fun date night with your significant other. Pandemic protocols and social media ingenuity have flipped the dating game on its head with the #DateNightChallenge.

The premise is simple; you play a round of Rock-Paper-Scissors and the winner decides on where to get takeout for each course of your dinner date. So, hop in the car and bring some wet wipes because your #DateNightChallenge starts now.

Round one – Appetizers

Start your #DateNightChallenge with something fun like Asian street. The hottest new craze in Montréal are the Korean corn dogs at Chung Chun Rice Hot Dog. There are 11 different kinds of corn dogs to choose from! From the classic original, you can even get them encrusted with French fries or try one that replaces the hot dog with pure cheese!

Satay Brothers

Another fun snack on a stick are satay skewers from the Outremont spot Thammada, where their street food inspired menu features chicken satay on their own or as a part of a larger platter with grilled chicken wings and crispy rolls. Satay Brothers offer chicken as well as beef satay skewers, but you must try their famous pork belly baos. Two to an order, these are perfect to whet your appetite before your next round.

Pizza Toni

Some might think of pizza as an actual meal, but when you think of New York style pizza, it’s definitely a snack. Check out Toni pizza, Adamo or La New Yorkaise for a classic New York thin-crust slice. Toppings vary from a traditional cheese, to all dressed and vegetarian and the highly controversial Hawaiian.

Beba

Like fancy Hot Pockets, the Argentinean empanadas from Restaurant Beba are fun and delicious. They come in two varieties; vegetarian cheese and spinach and the “cheeseburger”: braised beef, onions, pickles, mustard and house made American cheese. Side of special sauce for dipping.

Bucky Roasters

Round two – Main course

The round two winner has great choices to keep date night rolling into the main course.

Try out a new style of fried chicken and stop by The Farsides for a bucket of their Thai inspired Hat Yai fried chicken. Or if you’re more of a fried chicken sandwich type of couple, win your round and order a Moon Dog or Spicoli sandwich at Bucky Roosters.

If something more substantial is your thing, the variety of pastas at the newly opened wine bar Bar Bara will hit the spot. You can’t go wrong with a classic cacio e pepe or spaghetti Bolognese.  Or try Griffintown’s Mano Cornuto for their schiacciata sandwiches stuffed with salami or meatballs. Discover their roman style slab pizzas and pastas as well.

Vegans and vegetarians, don’t feel left out. Visit Le Mariachi for your fill on Southern-Californian inspired cuisine. Plant-based “chorizo”, frijoles and sweet potato burritos and fries. Partner chef and owner Dino Angelo Luciano, winner of Master Chef America, mans the kitchen.

Round three – Dessert

If you’re the winner of the dessert round, good luck choosing among these great places to cap off the night.

Visit Old Montréal’s newest dessert spot, LApop. Pick between a Belgian waffle pop or all-natural popsicles and dip and dress them anyway you want with a choice of various ingredients like caramel, dark chocolate, Nutella, crushed nuts and candies.

La Cornetteria

Check out La Cornetteria in Little Italy for all your favourite Italian sweet treats. Flakey cornetti stuffed with custard or chocolate and their famous cronetto, their Italian take on the Cronut. If doughnuts are your thing, stop by DoughNats where they specialize in mini-doughnuts (you can eat more!) or Bomboloni Boss and indulge in stuffed Italian bomboloni and nuvole.

You can’t talk about dessert without mentioning Montréal’s own Mr. Puffs. Making loukoumades (or “puffs”) a household name, these Greek desserts are small two-bite doughnuts that are dunked in a honey bath and topped with a glaze of your choice including, chocolate, hazelnut, salted caramel and more!
