Welcome back, New Yorkers and avid rail travelers: Amtrak’s Adirondack train service between New York City and Montréal has returned! Recognized as one of the world’s most scenic train rides, the 10-hour trip takes passengers through the Hudson Valley and along the shores of Lake Champlain into the rolling southern countryside of Québec before arriving in the province’s most populous city. Used by as many as 117,000 passengers in 2019, it’s never been easier to access and enjoy all the things to do that Montréal has to offer.

How long is the ride?

Amtrak’s New York City-Montréal Adirondack train service is 600 kilometres (373 miles) long, and takes about 10 hours to complete provided there are no service interruptions during the trip.

 

Where does the New York City-Montréal Adirondack train stop?

Departing from the Moynihan Train Hall found across 8th Avenue from the existing Penn Station complex and Madison Square Garden in New York City, the train travels downstate through towns and cities in the order of Yonkers, Croton-Harmon, Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff, Hudson, Albany-Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Fort Edward-Glens Falls, Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Port Henry, Westport, Port Kent, Plattsburgh, and a border crossing stop Rouses Point in the United States.

Then it’s a straight shot to Saint-Lambert on the South Shore before arriving at Montréal’s Central Station, just in time to enjoy a meal at any of the city’s restaurants before diving into its rich and lauded nightlife.

What kinds of features does the New York City-Montréal Adirondack train have?

Amenities will vary by train, but generally each trip offers onboard WiFi service and a variety of meals, snacks and beverages for sale via a Café Car service. Restrooms are located in each car.

There is also a coach class offered with wide, reclining seats with greater legroom with no middle seat option and at-seat trays, reading lights and electric outlets. There is no First Class or Business Class seats offered on this train.

According to Amtrak, passengers that are traveling with infant or small children using a child car seat “may place the seat in a vacant seat only if it is not needed for a paying passenger; children under 2 years of age may be required to ride on the passenger’s lap and the child car seat stored in an appropriate baggage area.”
